Our sommeliers write tasting notes under pseudonym names
Higgo Jacobs, before, during and after studying Law at Stellenbosch University, spent nine years on either side of the cellar door. First making wine, then marketing and exporting it. After relocating to the UK, he cut his teeth on the wines of the world, working with highly respected importer, Anthony Byrne Fine Wines, and later managing London’s Notting Hill branch for award winning wine merchants, Jeroboams. He is certified with the Court of Master Sommeliers, and also holds a WSET Advanced Certificate, with distinction. After a stint as resident Sommelier at Steenberg Hotel, Higgo started consulting in the industry, and is now working with various establishments. Higgo is a holder of a certificate of distinction in the Wine Magazine / Michael Fridjon Tasting academy and has been a judge at the International Wine Challenge (IWC – UK) since 2007, tasting for various local publications and competitions. He is also Tasting Director for newly founded Top 100 SA Wines Challenge.
James Pietersen, is a long way from studying political science and philosophy at Stellenbosch University – but that’s where his affection for wine was born. The head sommelier for Belthazar and Balducci’s restaurants in Cape Town, James previously worked as a wine buyer for Vineyard Connection. James enjoys his job as it means regular interaction with customers and providing input on their food and wine pairings. James also revels in hands-on training of a new generation of sommeliers working for their group of restaurants. A regular Classic Wine panellist, he also tastes for Platter’s South African Wines, Christian Eedes’ wine reports and the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.
